Associate Content Editor
- Worldwide
We’re looking for talented individuals interested in joining a growing global company. At Slang, you’ll be an early team member of a global, well-funded startup spun out from MIT. We’re building a world-class team to revolutionize language learning with cutting-edge technology and delightful design.
What we’re working on at Slang
Slang started at MIT as a research project on using AI and NLP to make learning a new language as efficient as possible. Our technology powers a highly adaptive e-learning platform that offers an unprecedented variety of specialized English courses and proficiency tests for career development in over one hundred fields like Sales, Finance, Logistics, Medicine, and Law. With just a small team, we’ve already created the largest professional English offering in the world. Now, we’re scaling up to release 1,000 more courses over the next three years.
What this role is about
Our department is responsible for developing curricula and implementation materials that meet the needs of our four B2B segments: Corporations, Universities, ESL Schools, and Governments. This role works on the full spectrum of content in our app, including vocabulary, grammar, and testing features. You’ll be required to take a hands-on role in the editorial process from conceptualization to release, both applying and informing content guidelines while ensuring a speedy and efficient release of content for our growing user base. You will support the development of quality courses across the board by assisting with photo selection, audio review, drafting of grammar explanations, and other dimensions of editorial review as needed. You will also play a key part in informing the product experience for our users: you can expect a focus on administering the rapidly expanding lexicon that powers all of our courses and giving feedback on the cutting-edge natural language parser that matches words with meanings.
This is a role that covers a wide spectrum: proofreading, editing copy, researching photos, giving technical feedback to designers and developers, working with vendors, providing input for our product and content road maps, and adopting a learner-centric approach to content evaluation. Your success will hinge upon your ability to think critically and deeply about words, their many meanings and uses, and what the best presentation of our content should be.
What we expect you to do
- Assist in the research and development of new professional course areas
- Research, draft, and review definitions for English vocabulary, including technical and professional vocabulary with specialized definitions
- Review the output of our parsing process and ensure that all the content we present is accurately matched with meanings from our lexicon
- Participate in the selection of photos and illustrations that help represent the content we teach
- Supervise audio recording and review
- Ensure that all content is well-structured, factually accurate, and appropriate for learners at any point in their English-learning journey
- Provide input to product managers and engineers, with an eye to shaping our product into the best learning-content platform possible
Technical skills and requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in linguistics (theoretical or applied), TESOL, foreign language, or another related field
- Experience thinking about language in a structured and analytical way. This is not a traditional editorial position; our strongest candidates have had linguistics backgrounds that required substantial technical analysis of language
- Exceptional English-language skills (C1-C2 Level) - especially in copyediting and proofreading
- Proficiency in a language other than English. Our users are all learning a language for the first time as an adult, and our team members need to be able to relate to that experience
- Pluses, but not required: language-teaching experience; experience with NLP and/or databases (SQL; Postgres in particular), and/or proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese
Soft skills
- A flexible, process-oriented mindset: you easily learn and quickly embrace new systems. We believe in good guidelines and good processes here, but we also believe in revising them quickly when they’ve outlived their usefulness
- Excitement for a fast-paced, rapidly changing start-up environment. We really want candidates who want to grow with us and we believe in supporting them throughout their careers
- Strong team player and proactive individual contributor
- A passion for Slang and the problem we’re solving
